Home Delivered Meals.
Please call 269-925-0137 for more information or with questions.
Because of the size of our area, we have several options to make sure that seniors have meals. Menus are created by a registered dietician with the needs of senior nutrition in mind. We serve home-delivered meals in Berrien and Van Buren counties. Please see some of the option possibilities below:
Hot meals-5 days per week
Frozen meals for weekends and our more remote clients
Choice-Frozen- clients choose their meals from a menu of different options
Liquid Nutrition- can be arranged with a doctor’s prescription
Meals are provided for holidays when we do not deliver and emergency meals are sent out several times a year for use when weather emergencies hinder our ability to deliver.
Client Eligibility & Responsibility
60 years or older
Spouse/partner or handicapped dependent of the client (if funding is available)
Unable to leave the house under normal circumstances to shop. (If the client is regularly not home when meals are delivered, he/she may be disqualified.)
Unable to obtain food or prepared meals in other ways
The senior must be home to receive the meals. We must see the client at least twice a week in person
Client must be able to safely feed him/herself and the meals must not negatively impact their health
Must be willing to allow for an annual in-person assessment to track progress and determine continued eligibility
Our drivers must have clear access to your driveway and door to deliver. If the driveway and/or access to the door is not clear or is deemed dangerous, deliveries may be temporarily suspended.
PLEASE call to cancel your meals by 10 am the day before if you will not be home to get the meal for any reason. We are not able to leave meals in coolers etc.
The Process.
Call our office at 269-925-0137 or 855 -925-0137 to schedule your assessment.
A staff member will call or visit your home to assess your needs and determine eligibility under program guidelines. Assessments will be done at six-month intervals to track your progress and continued eligibility.
Meal deliveries can usually start within a few days if the client is eligible
If a senior is not eligible for home-delivered meals, they may choose our Private Pay program or participate in our congregate meals at a senior center.
More than a meal.
You will get to know your driver(s). Part of their job is to check on you to make sure that you are ok, and to visit briefly, in a safe way. The program rules say that the driver must see you at least twice a week in person, so please be willing to comply.
How Are These Meals Funded?
Several funding streams help to cover a portion of the costs of making and delivering meals.
Older Americans Act senior nutrition funding (Federal and State Funds)
Grants
Donations from area community members and loved ones of clients
Fundraising through events and local partnerships
Program income from fair share donations- This is important for us to be able to continue to provide meals and so we ask that you give as generously as you can. We understand that not everyone can give, and will not deny you meals if you make no donation. Please give to support this important program that is benefitting you.
There may be times when the demand for meals is greater than our funding and at those times, we may limit the number of meals each senior gets, or start a waiting list.
Weather Closures.
We live and operate in Michigan and know that weather can at times be severe. Our policy is that when schools in an area are closed, we do not deliver in that area. If the Benton Harbor Area Schools are closed, the offices are closed and there will be no deliveries. Closures are posted on local television stations, our website and social media. Please watch these sources for information on closures.
We provide emergency meals several times a year that are to be eaten during weather emergencies that prevent our deliveries. In most areas, you will get a call
